What to Expect in a Card Room for Poker
Every person who has recently learned poker, especially Texas Hold’em, would want to test their skills and knowledge in an actual poker game. The place to do this is in the casinos and card rooms. However, the new poker players hould not just barge into a card room without having a clue on what he would find inside. The new poker players hould be prudent enough to know beforehand what he will find inside. Like a soldier, he should first know the lay of the land.
In a casino or card room, the poker player will find his game on a large poker table. The usual shape of the table is oval, to accommodate as much players as possible and to give each player a chance to see each other’s faces and actions.
As the poker player approaches the felt-covered poker table, he will see someone (perhaps a man with an expressionless face or a woman with a sultry smile) who sits in front of a tray full of chips. This someone is the dealer. On the table and to the right of the dealer, one will find a small plastic circle. This circle is for the house or the casino. On this circle, the dealer will place the rake, or the percentage of the house out of the pot.
Aside from the plastic circle, one will find two more slots to the left of the dealer. In one slot, the dealer places the cash from players who are buying in. And in the other slot, the dealer places the tips.
Apart from the circle and the slots, the surface of the poker table has no markings, except for that one tiny plastic button which is moved from one player to another. At the beginning, this button is in front of the player who is to the immediate left of the dealer. This player is called the small blind. The small blind begins the betting round by making the first bet.
To the immediate left of the small blind is another player designated as the big blind. He is the second person who will make a bet. Betting in poker proceeds from right to left. That is, a poker player must act his turn only after the player to his right is done. The player to the left must wait until he has made a bet, a call, or a raise or he has folded.
After one game, the button is passed to the next player, who was the big blind earlier. This player is now the small blind and the one to his immediate left takes on the role of the big blind.
