Poker Etiquette 101: How to act in a poker table

Avoid swearing, or trash talking in any poker game. Poker is a game of strategies, a mind game. There is no room for stooping as low as distracting your opponents with harsh words. Bear in mind that poker players are different types of people. Some may not share your way of talking, and might find it offensive. Remember that poker is first and foremost a game, so let it be. Poker should be a fun, friendly venue for challenging each others’ skills.

Do not abuse the poker dealer or other players. Just because you are consecutively getting bad hands, it is not a reason to blame the dealer or other players. Why? First, the cards are drawn randomly. The community cards are drawn with a burn card before the flop, and then before the river and before the turn. It means that poker tries to be as fair as it can be. Second, if you cannot play your bad cards, then you are not really a good poker player . Maybe, that is the reason why you are harassing the dealer and the players at the poker table you are on. If you suspect that you are being cheated, you can always complain to the management.

Do not play too slowly. It is rude to make other poker players wait. Some poker players do this strategy to intimidate their opponents, but this strategy is found to be very cheap.

Stack your poker chips neatly when you make a bet so that others can see clearly how much you are betting. Some poker players throw their chips right through the pot, and this is considered rude, and you may be even suspected of cheating.

Do not flirt with other poker players while still playing. If you really find an opponent attractive, wait until you leave the poker table before you make a move on him/her. Some flirt with the other poker players while still in the game just to distract them. Are you really that bad a player that you have to resort to such tactics? Maybe poker is not really for you, then.

Do not make any unnecessary comments about your hand and the community cards. A good poker player keeps his silence while in play. But if you really must acknowledge an opponent’s good hand, you could just say “nice hand”. This is an accepted poker gesture.

Do not leave the poker table to avoid blinds. Although in some types of poker, avoiding is legal, you should avoid doing so. It just shows, again, that you are a bad poker player .
