That is, such poker players have the ability to play any poker variant. And win consistently. This means that a poker player will find it beneficial if he is able to play several poker variants. By playing various poker games, he can definitely hone his poker skills, develop poker strategies, and improve poker techniques.

The majority of the poker variants today were invented in the United States during the middle of the twentieth century. These variants have enough similarities that when one has played in one poker variant, the other poker variant will not be too difficult to learn. There are only several little details that make each poker variant unique from the others.

With so many poker variants being played at present, there is now a method of classifying them. There are four known classifications of poker variants. These are “Draw Poker”, “Stud Poker”, “Community Card Poker”, and “Miscellaneous Poker”.

In Draw Poker, a poker player is usually dealt with all the cards that he needs in order to complete a hand. That is, a poker player will receive all the five cards that he needs. These cards are dealt face down. This means that only the poker player holding the cards my know the values of the cards. Then, as the draw poker game progresses, the poker player may improve his hand (make the weaker hand become stronger) by discarding some cards and replace them with other cards from the deck of still unused cards. The most widely-played draw poker is the game called “Five-Card Draw”.

In Stud Poker, a poker player is also dealt with all the cards he needs, but not all at once. A poker player gains more cards as the game progresses and as each betting round is conducted. But not all the cards that the stud poker player receives are hidden. That is, the poker player is dealt with both face-down cards and face-up cards. Obviously, the face-up cards are shown to the opponents who will make decisions based on the revealed cards. The most popular stud poker games are the “Seven-Card Stud” and the “Five-Card Stud”.

In Community Card Poker, a poker player is dealt with an incomplete hand. That is, he will receive less than the five cards needed for one hand. But the poker player can combine his cards with the face-up cards placed at the center of the poker table. These face-up cards are shared by all players and this is why they are called community cards. The main event in the World Series of Poker is the community card poker game called the “Texas Hold’em”.

The Miscellaneous Poker games are those that are based on any of the three classifications above, with slight modifications.
