What Makes Poker a Fascinating Game?
`Undoubtedly, poker is the most popular game, not only in one country but all over the world. Poker is not only popular years ago but also until today. And this popularity of poker may never fade. And the reason is due to the very nature of this game. Poker, whatever its variant, continues to attract people. But what makes poker a most fascinating game?
Many poker players believe that this game is fascinating because it is a combination of three things: mathematics, psychology, and social dynamics. Here is how these three fields influence a poker game.
Mathematics
A poker player can not make decisions (check, bet, call, fold, or raise) during the betting round if he does not have a working knowledge of mathematical probabilities. No serious poker player bases his decision on the alignment of stars or on his dreams. The serious poker player thinks about odds involved in poker. And these are card odds, edge odds, and pot odds. The word “odds” simply refers to probabilities. For example, when deciding whether to call a bet or fold, he must think somewhat like this: “What are the odds or the probability that this opponent is holding a pair of high cards?”
Psychology
Knowing mathematical probability is not enough. Besides, as the game proceeds to the last rounds, whatever odds that were memorized by the poker player may no longer apply. And this is where psychology comes in. Poker appeals to people who don’t like mathematics because poker also involves psychology.
The psychology in poker involves categorizing the personalities of the opponents. Is one of them aggressive? Is one of them tight? Is one of them on a tilt? Aside from this, the poker player must also learn how to control his feelings. This does not imply that the poker player must lose the ability to feel. In fact, the poker should always have the ability to feel in order to understand his opponents. But he must acquire the ability to control his expression of his feelings and the ability to think without the influence of such feelings.
Social Dynamics
In no gambling game does the adage “no man is an island” applies better than poker. When one relatively pleasant poker player leaves the table and he is replaced with an arrogant aggressive one, the whole atmosphere at the poker table changes. And then, no two poker players have exactly the same motivations. And no two poker players have the same way of playing. One had to adjust to all of these at the poker table. And, as one adjusts, he must never forget the ultimate goal of the whole game. It is not about having a winning hand. It is all about winning money.
